Glenn Basham, Concertmaster Glenn Basham has degrees from the North Carolina School of the Arts and Indiana University. Basham has served as concertmaster of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming, the Colorado Music Festival, the Hot Springs Music Festival, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the Pine Mountain Music Festival. He previously played with the Detroit Symphony under Antal Dorati. Basham has recorded for Centaur and Fleur de Son records. He is the featured guest artist on the Miami Saxophone Quartet's latest CD Four More Giant Steps and has made two CD recordings with pianist Jodie DeSalvo. Basham is also a featured violinist on Skitch Henderson’s Swinging with Strings jazz CD on the Arbors jazz label. Basham is presently a member of the artist faculty at the University of Miami. He joined the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra as concertmaster in 1994. Glenn Basham is generously underwritten anonymously for the 2008-09 season. Ming Gao, Associate Concertmaster Ming Gao served as concertmaster of the Nanjing Experimental Orchestra in his native China, the Eastman Philharmonia in Heidelberg Castle Festival, Germany, and acting concertmaster of the Youngstown and Harrisburg symphony orchestras and MOSSPAC Chamber Orchestra. Gao is currently a first violinist of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra of New York in the summer months. Before moving to Naples, Gao was with the Pittsburgh Opera and Ballet Orchestra. He also appeared in a number of music festivals in the United States, Germany and China. In 1999, 2002 and 2006 he was invited to play chamber music concerts in Nanjing and Beijing, China, which were broadcast live by Jiang Su Provincial TV station and CCTV (China national television station). He is also a guest violin professor at Nanjing Conservatory of Music, offering violin master classes in China during the summer. He has recorded solo and chamber music for radio and television stations. As a soloist, Gao’s appearances include the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Nova, Nanjing Experimental Orchestra and Jiang Su Provincial Symphony Orchestra, among others. David Mastrangelo, Principal Second Violin David Mastrangelo began playing the violin at the age of 8 and began studying privately at 12 in his hometown of Syracuse, N.Y. He attended Southern Methodist University on a full music scholarship and graduated with honors in 1990. While there, he studied with Emanuel Borok and was concertmaster of the orchestra under Ansel Brusilow. He then attended Mannes College of Music in New York where he studied with Sally Thomas. From 1992 to 1994 he played in the New World Symphony, where he was co-concertmaster under the batons of Eduardo Mata, Hugh Wolff, Lawrence Foster, Barry Tuckwell and Michael Tilson Thomas, among others. In 1994 he became assistant principal violin with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2000 was given the position of principal second violin. Since that time he has appeared as a soloist with the orchestra and has performed in numerous chamber music concerts. Mastrangelo teaches privately and also creates arrangements for solo violin and string quartet. He dedicates any recognition for his musical accomplishments to the glory of God. Erik Berg, Associate Principal Second Violin Erik Berg, associate principal second violin, received his B.M. and M.M. degrees, with academic honors, from the New England Conservatory in Boston. Berg’s previous orchestral engagements include the Penn's Woods Chamber Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute and the principal second violin position as well as solo appearances with the Huntington Chamber Orchestra in Boston. His love of chamber music brought him to Vermont for four summer seasons with the Yellow Barn chamber music festival. Berg has spent several summers in Oakland, Maine, as a faculty member at the New England Music Camp. He spends his free time with his wife, Natalie, and two children, Elizabeth and Jonah. Patrick Neal, Assistant Principal Violin
Patrick Neal earned a master’s degree at the Yale School of Music under the guidance of Syoko Aki. Following Yale, Neal spent two years in the concertmaster rotation of the New World Symphony. Neal has participated in several international tours, most notably as a soloist in Great Britain, Russia, Hungary and Australia. He has studied chamber music with members of the Tokyo, Vermeer and Juilliard quartets, Peter Oundjian and Joan Panetti. Neal has performed as soloist with the Arts Nova Chamber Musicians, the Amherst and Clarence Symphonies, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and, as a competition winner, the New World Symphony. James Zhang, Assistant Principal Violin James Zhang a native of China, earned his B.M. degree at Tianjin Conservatory of Music. In the summer of 1986, he attended the Meadowmount School of Music under the sponsorship of Mrs. Galamian. He began graduate studies at Manhattan School of Music and studied with Charles Treger, the first American to win the Wieniawski International Violin Competition. Later Zhang studied with Treger at University of Massachusetts where he earned his Master of Music degree in 1989. Zhang has been with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra since 1990. Gregg Anderson Gregg Anderson, violin, has a B.M. degree from University of Kansas and a M.M. degree from College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Anderson’s previous orchestral experience includes the Florida Symphony (Orlando), Columbus Symphony (Ohio) and Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. He was concertmaster with the Hamilton Orchestra, University of Kansas Symphony and St. Joseph Symphony.

Marlena Chow Marlena Chow, violin, joined the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001. Previously she was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach. She currently plays in the Santa Fe Opera during the summers. As a soloist Chow has appeared with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the National Repertory Orchestra in Breckenridge, Colo., the New World Symphony and the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis. Chow has performed chamber music with members of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals, the New World Symphony, the New England Conservatory, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Musicorda Summer String Program. She has also been a guest artist with the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota and the Headwaters Music Festival. Born in St. Paul, Minn., Chow received her B. M. in violin performance at the New England Conservatory in Boston, where she studied with Malcolm Lowe, the concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Marlena Chow is on leave of absence for the 2008-09 season. |

Geoffrey Day Geoffrey Day, violin, earned his B.M. degree from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Ruggiero Ricci, and earned his M.M. degree from Michigan State University as a student of I-Fu Wang. While in Michigan, he served as concertmaster of the Michigan State University, Battle Creek and Midland symphonies; assistant concertmaster of the Kalamazoo symphony and principal second violin of the Greater Lansing symphony. Since moving to Florida in 1994, Day has performed frequently as a member of the Neapolitan Quartet and as a recitalist with his wife, pianist Lan Lam.

Ruth Leone Ruth Leone, violin, is a former member of the New World Symphony. She also performed with the Heidelberg Castle Festival Orchestra, the National Orchestral Institute and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute. Leone was concertmaster of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra when they won the International Youth in Music Festival in Vienna. She received a B.M. degree from the Eastman School of Music and is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory Preparatory School. |

Boris Sandler Boris Sandler, violin, was born in Tbilisi, Georgia in the USSR. Both of his parents were violinists with Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra and Sandler began playing violin at age 7. During the next four years he performed regularly as a soloist for school concerts and major events throughout the state of Georgia (USSR). Sandler was first-prize winner at the State Competition for young performers at age 16 and played Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Mozart violin concertos with the Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra. He moved to the United States with his family in 1979 and began studies with Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School under full scholarship. He also received a full scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music in New York and studied with Glenn Dicterow. He has performed as a substitute violinist with the New York Philharmonic as well as other orchestras throughout New York. |

Daniela Shtereva was the first place prize-winner of the Lynn National Violin Competition in 2007, the Society of American Musicians Auditions in Chicago in 2007 and the Washington International String Competition in 2006. She was also a semi-finalist of the Sarasate International Violin Competition 2007, the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in 2007, the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis 2006 and the International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition in 2005. Her latest solo and chamber music appearances include concerts with the Redlands Symphony, Lynn Philharmonia, Seattle Chamber Music Festival, Kennedy Center and Pittsburgh. Live broadcasts of her performances can be found on the official web site of the Indianapolis competition www.violin.org, as well as on www.youtube.com. She has five CDs released on Music Minus One.
Shtereva was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the National Conservatory of Music in Sofia Bulgaria, a master’s in Music from Louisiana State University and an artist diploma from Carnegie Mellon University. She performs on a Vuillaume violin and a Vigneron bow generously on loan from her teacher, Cyrus Forough.

Anne-Marie Terranova Anne-Marie Terranova, violin, holds B.M. and M.M. degrees from the Juilliard School where she studied with Sally Thomas and Stephen Clapp. Terranova has participated in many national and international music festivals including Grand Teton Music Festival, the Quartet Program, Aspen Music Festival and Academia Chigiana in Siena, Italy. She has toured extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe giving both solo and chamber music recitals, and has appeared as a soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Juilliard Orchestra, Arts Nova Chamber Musicians and the Amherst Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared in televised performances of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society. Before joining the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, Terranova played principal second violin for four years with the Charleston Symphony. Sania D. Whitaker Sania D. Whitaker, violin, received a B.M. degree from the Tel-Aviv Music Academy and a M. M. degree from the University of Miami where she was the orchestra concertmaster. Whitaker was the Young Israel Philharmonic assistant concertmaster, the Tel-Aviv Music Academy Orchestra concertmaster and a substitute with the Israel Philharmonic. She received the Ruth Blaunstein-Rosenberg orchestral scholarship at Peabody Conservatory while earning a graduate performance diploma there. |

Rebecca Ziv
Rebecca Ziv, violin, received a B.M. degree from the New School of Music in Philadelphia. She has performed with many ensembles including the Bach Festival in Bethlehem, Penn.
