Jessie Goebel, Principal Viola

Jessie Goebel received her B.M. degree from the Eastman School of Music and M.M. from the Juilliard School. She has studied with Karen Tuttle, James Dunham and Philipp Naegele, among others. Goebel has played principal and section viola with the Tanglewood orchestra (1995-97), the New World Symphony (1996-98), the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder (1998-2000) and in the Grand Teton Music Festival orchestra and chamber ensembles (2002).  1998-99 marked her first season as a member of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra.

Monica Biacchi, Assistant Principal Viola

Monica Biacchi studied under Karen Tuttle at the Juilliard School and with Vladimir Mendelssohn at the Hague and Rotterdam conservatories.  She was awarded a diploma in 1990 from Fiesole School of Music in Florence, Italy, under Maestro Piero Farulli.  She attended master classes with the Tokyo String Quartet and Guarneri String Quartet.  Her earlier studies took place from 1977-1987 at the Parma Conservatory, Italy, under Luigi Mazza.  Biacchi's professional experience includes the Charleston Symphony, Spoleto Festival Orchestra and Tanglewood Music Festival.  Biacchi joined the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995.

Lisa Mattson, Assistant Principal Viola

Lisa Mattson chose the viola as her instrument in fourth grade as part of a public school music program. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the Juilliard School as a recipient of the Victor Herbert Scholarship. She studied chamber music with the members of the Juilliard String Quartet and was selected to perform as part of the Juilliard Quartet Seminar, the Blossom Festival and the Music Academy of the West. Mattson earned her M.M. degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music as a student of Heidi Castleman and Lynne Ramsey.  

Prior to joining the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990, she played with the Akron Symphony, the Youngstown Symphony and the Lancaster Festival Orchestra. Also active as a teacher, Mattson maintains a private viola studio and is on the music faculty of the Community School of Naples and the Stringendo School for Strings Summer Academy in West Palm Beach.

James Griffith

James Griffith, viola, received his M.M. degree from the Juilliard School.  He also received his undergraduate degree from the Manhattan School of Music and attended Florida State University. He is a former member of the Hudson String Quartet in New York, faculty member of Point-Counterpoint Chamber Music Camp in Vermont and director of the New Arts Festival in Fort Myers.  He formerly served as principal violist of the New York Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the New York Virtuosi.  Griffith is co-founder of American Virtuosi. Raised in Southwest Florida, Griffith returned in 1988 to be a part of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra.

Glenn Loontjens

Glenn Loontjens, viola, is originally from Ghent, Belgium.  Loontjens moved to the United States at age 9 and began studying violin at age 10.  He attended Indiana University as a double major in viola and computer science, where he studied with Abraham Skernick and Joseph DePasquale. He is formerly a principal player of the New World Symphony, the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, the Spoleto Festival and the Festival Dei Due Mondi in Italy.  He has performed with the Youngstown, Erie, Wheeling, Jacksonville and Florida West Coast Symphony Orchestras as well as the Florida Orchestra, the Colorado Music Festival and the touring company of the New York City Opera.  Glenn is also a faculty member of the Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, N.C.


      

                                             

Suzannah Chalick

Suzannah Chalick, viola, received her B.M. degree from the Eastman School of Music where she studied with Martha Katz.  She earned her M.M. degree from the Juilliard School as a student of Karen Tuttle.  Previously she served as principal viola of the New World Symphony.  Chalick has performed in numerous music festivals including the Taos School of Music, Tanglewood Music Center and the Colorado Music Festival.
